Wittlich is a small town in the Rheinland, between Koblenz and Trier, close to Luxembourg. The Sonnora is the newest three star restaurant in Germany and well worth the detour, if you are travelling in the area. The restaurant has recently been beautifully re-decorated. You can have drinks on the terrace or in the conservatory overlooking the gardens. The establishment is run by the Thieltges family with all members of the family involved. Chef Helmut Thieltges is in charge of the kitchen. His cooking is superb and his egg dishes are particularly memorable: poached eggs with Perigord truffles or scrambled eggs with caviar and cream of carrots or you could try his warm lobster medallions with scallops, served with gaspacho jelly delicious. The wine list is very strong on Rhine wine from the region.
