LE CANARD |
Elbchaussee, 139; tel.: 040 880 5057; fax: 040 8891 3259
This restaurant is at the top of Hamburg's culinary world and it is well situated too, in a very modern building right by the River Elbe with fine river views. Here chef Josef Viehauser will provide you with an excellent meal in comfortable surroundings. He has built a solid reputation for his new simplified cuisine with never more than 3 ingredients on the plate, with no over complicated presentation, using only the best fresh produce. Try monkfish bordelaise or fillet of Arctic char with a ginger sauce and a puree of white beans.

LANDHAUS SCHERRER |
Elbchaussee, 130; tel.: 040 880 1325; fax: 040 880 6260
Landhaus means country inn. It was opened 25 years ago by Albert Scherrer and has become one of Hamburg's two best restaurants. Mr Scherrer's widow Emmi Scherrer and chef Heinz Wehmann continue to keep standards high here along the river Elbe. Among the dishes on offer you will find medallions of monkfish in a lobster sauce and filet of veal with mushrooms and a red wine sauce. A north German speciality is saddle of venison on a bed of cabbage with celery and glazed cherries. I always like a cold dessert souffle and here they have semolina souffle with marinated berries and nectarine ice-cream.

JAHRESZEITEN GRILL |
Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, Neuer Jungfernstieg, 9; tel.: 040 3494 3312;
fax: 040 3494 2600
The grill room of the Four Seasons hotel is one of three restaurants in this fabulous luxury hotel — one of Europe's best. Typical grill dishes such as T-bone steak are well presented. The lobster is also good and you can choose your own accompaniment among the sauces and vegetables offered.

FISCHEREINHAFEN |
Grosse Elbstrasse, 143; tel.: 040 38 1816; fax: 040 389 3021
Translated into English the name of this friendly and lively restaurant is «the fishing harbour». Naturally fish in every shape and form is on the menu (no meat). The chef buys his seafood straight from the fishing vessels in the harbour so freshness of the produce is guaranteed. This place is a Hamburg classic, much liked by business men and politicians (including Helmut Kohl). Among dishes that stay in my memory are smoked eel with scrambled eggs, halibut and turbot with various garnishes and the Hamburg speciality, plaice, known in German as scholle. A new feature is a small oyster bar, where you can enjoy a light lunch.

ALTES MOSKAU |
Hans-Henny-Jahnn-Weg 58, tel.: 040 22 73 9277
This inconspicuous corner restaurant in Barmbek serves original Russian dishes in a rustic ambience. A large assortment of Russian vodka, many diverse dishes and a friendly staff offer diversion in the "Restaurant-Dschungel" (restaurant jungle) of Hamburg. Take along your friends and plenty of time.
