TANTRIS

Most gourmet restaurants have a conventional or traditional decor but Tantris is different. It has a most unusual and very modern interior that does not appeal to everybody. It is however the best restaurant in Munich ottering top class food, so do eat here if you are visiting this appealing city. Chef Hans Haas has established a high reputation and is well worth his two and a half stars. Perch-pike filets are cooked in a mustard crust with a puree ot turnips, langoustine cooked in a curry and saffron sauce. A perfect dessert would be fried banana with a chocolate foam. The sommelier, Paula Bosch, one of the tew lady sommeliers, will find the best wine to accompany your meal.
 

GASTHAUS GLOCKENBACH

Karl Ederer is the chef and owner of this restaurant — an old vaulted building, previously an inn, with wooden panelling and decorated with very modern art. The menu is traditional (no lemon grass or other exotic ingredients!) with mainly freshwater fish from the region. A special first course I recommend is fresh forest mushroom, sauteed in olive oil with a spoon of veal juice. A good dessert is pear tart with rose-hip sauce.

If you travel 80 kms east / south east From Munich on motorway A8 you will reach one of Germany's finest restaurants under the management of master chef Heinz Winkler. He built his career in Munich but some years ago took over this attractive country inn. Some of the rooms have beautiful views over the Foothills of the Alps so you can combine gastronomy with beautiful surroundings. The cooking is of a high standard and recently Winkler was awarded the gold medal of the International Academy of Gastronomy. I very much look forward to my next visit when I intend to try his filet of turbot with leeks and madeira sauce and perhaps saddle of rabbit with white truffle butter and pasta. For dessert I might try a raspberry gratin with almond cream.
 

AUGUSTINER RESTAURANT

Augustiner is one of the most beautiful traditional inns in Munich. It is situated in the pedestrian area and has this wonderful «beergarden» in the back of the building. I was there in october, and it was a bit too cold to sit outside, but in summer it will be hard to get any of these tables
