It takes only a short hour by car north of Milan to reach the splendid atmospheric Hotel Villa d'Este, beautifully positioned on Lake Como with indoor and outdoor swimmming pools and gardens down to the lake. There are two restaurants, the Verandah that looks over the lake and is my lavourite, and also the Grill Room. The service is first class. I have stayed here many times enjoying good modern. Italian food and mainly Italian wines.
