SAVINI

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II; tel.: 02 72 00 3433; fax: 02 72 02 2888

Restaurant Savini is an institution in Milan with elaborate decor, characteristic of its 19th century roots, with turn of the century glittering chandeliers and plush red carpets. It is attractively located in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, where all visitors like to walk. The cooking is very traditional. Milanese specialities like rice fried like a pancake or ossobucco (veal braised with orange zest, tomato, onions) are excellent choices.

GIANNINO

Via Amatore Sciesa, 8; tel.: 02 55 19 5582; fax: 02 55 19 5790

Here is a classic Milanese restaurant which has recently celebrated its centenary. This beautiful restaurant with several dining rooms is a must for any visitor to Milan. You can see through to the kitchen watching the chefs at work. There is a also a winter garden. New chef Davide Oldani has some interesting specialities, for example steamed lobster in a pastry crust. The wine list features naturally mostly Italian wines.

CRACCO-PECK

Via Victor Hugo 4, near Duomo; tel.: 02 87 6774

When a renowned local chef (Carlo Cracco) joined forces with the city's top gourmet food store (Peck), the results were not long in coming. Within three years, Cracco-Peck boasted two Michelin stars. The dining room is done in an elegant style that favors cool earth tones. Specialties include Milanese classics revisited — Cracco's take on saffron risotto and breaded veal cutlet should not be missed. Be sure to save room for the light, steam-cooked tiramisu.

BIFFI SCALA-TUOLA

Piazza della Scala; tel.: 02 86 6651; fax: 02 86 6653

If you are heading for the famous La Scala Opera House you can treat yourself to an excellent dinner, before or after the performance, at Biffi Scala-Tuola. This restaurant was opened soon after the Opera house, and is in the same building. Their specialities are classic Milanese and Lombardy dishes, and the desserts are particularly good, for example pear and pistachio torte or their famous torte Biffi Scala which is puff pastry with raspberries and cream.

BEOUCC

Piazza Belgioioso 2; tel.: 02 7602 0224; fax: 02 79 6173

Quite simply the oldest restaurant in Milan (300 years) located on an attractive square near La Scala Opera House. Beoucc serves classic Italian cuisine including some typical Milanese dishes. The service is friendly and attentive and in the summer meals can be eaten in the garden. In addition to all the classic pasta dishes you have a choice of bream filet with shrimps or sea bass with courgettes. A good meat dish is lamb cutlets with hollandaise sauce. This restaurant is a favourite of Milanese business people.

ANTICA OSTERIA DEL PONTE

Piazza G.Negri, Cassinetta di Lugagnano; tel.: 02 942 0034; fax: 02 942 0610

To have the finest possible meal in the Milan area you have to take a short trip, 20 kms (12 miles) south west of Milan to Cassinetta di Lugagnano. There you will find a traditional country inn with pink brick walls, three dining rooms and a lovely terrace with a small waterfall. You can eat on the terrace in good weather. The Santin family will look after you with Ezio Santin in the kitchen with his son Maurizio. Signora Renata Santin takes care of the guests in the dining room. The cooking is rich and imaginative, for example tarte de pates fraiches a la gourge et truffes blanches.

AIMO E NADIA

Via Montecuccoli, 6; tel.: 02 41 68 86; fax: 02 48 30 2005

Milan's best cuisine is a long way from the centre in a somewhat dull residential neighbourhood — but it is worth the journey so that you can enjoy the cooking of Aimo and his wife Nadia Moloni. There are only 36 seats in two small dining rooms decorated with modern paintings, so book ahead. When I was there recently I ordered green lasagna with watercress and sea anenomes with ricotta and fresh tomatoes.
