LE NEPTUNE |
Hotel Mandarin Oriental du Rhone, 1 quai Turrettini; tel.: 022 909 0006; fax: 022 909 0010
As the name and location imply, Neptune is a seafood restaurant right on the banks of Lake Geneva in the luxury Hotel du Rhone. On my visits to Geneva I try to fit in a meal here as I particularly like seafood and have found some good dishes prepared by young chef Eric Gascon. Try the roasted lobster tails with caramelised salsify or turbot with onions and feta cheese. There are several interesting fish varieties that can be taken out of Lake Geneva and you might well find them on the menu when you visit.

EL FARO |
1201 Genive, Rue de Fribourg 5, tel.: 022 732 2198
El Faro restaurant invites you for its specialty - fish baked in salt. The process of serving it is a real ceremony. Dorado or sea wolf, at the guests option, is cooked as a whole and is served in a white salty «crust». Then the waiter masterly «unseals» the «shell», cuts it into helpings and adds sauce. The dish costs 25 Euros for two.

DOMAINE DE CHATEAUVIEUX |
Peney-Dessus; 1Z42 Satigny (Geneve); tel.: 41 11 753 1511
In the heart of the right bank, Satigny receives you in the famous Domaine de Chateauvieux restaurant, where the atmosphere allays refinement with relaxation. Its plates are true works of art: mixing colours and flavours in pure magic. A wonderful wine list and terrace overlooking the vines. One of the finest establishments in traditional gastronomy awaits you in an enchanting setting that will turn your visit into an unforgettable moment.

LE CHAT BOTTE |
Hotel Beau Rivage, 13 quai du Mont-Blanc; tel.: 022 716 6920; fax: 022 716 6060
Beau Rivage is one of Geneva's smaller luxury hotels on the quai lacing the lake and the famous water jet. In good weather the Chat Botte (pussinboots!) moves out on to a rather noisy terrace where my wife and I lunched a few months ago. Some Geneva friends of mine think of this place as the best in town but my last meal was not quite up to scratch. It may have been a one-off. Chef Richard Cressac creates dishes such as coquille St Jacques poelees sauce aux epices or eminces de rognon avec moutarde a l'ancienne. If you would like a complete change of cuisine there is another restaurant in the hotel, Le Patara, serving Thai cuisine.

LE BEARN |
4 quai de la Poste; tel.: 022 321 0028; fax: 022 781 3115
«Traditional» is an important word when describing this Geneva landmark. Traditional, high quality French cuisine is what is on offer in a small restaurant attractively located by the river Rhone. Jean Paul Goddard, chef/patron, and his wife Denise will look after you with care in their two dining rooms with very different decor; one elegant, one rustic. I have enjoyed many a good meal here. Let me mention a few dishes: green asparagus flan with morels, and a good fish course is sea bass Provencale on a bed of vegetables. I have also tried filet mignon de veau moutarde (with mustard) and fresh herbs. The wine list has many interesting wines from the Geneva region, complementing the French wines. Service is good and there is an inexpensive lunch menu.

AUBERGE DU LION D’OR |
5 place Pierre-Gautier, Cologny; tel.: 022 736 4432; fax: 022 786 7462
Cologny is on a hill outside Geneva, only 3-4 miles out of town, on the road to Evian. At the Auberge Lion d'Oryou will have a beautiful view over the town and Lake Geneva through the large windows in the restaurant. In good weather you can eat outside in the garden, as we did last summer. The Auberge has a reputation for good food, provided by Gilles Dupont and Irishman Thomas Byrne, joint chefs de cuisine. The main restaurant offers dishes such as marble du foie gras aux aubergines et cacao.
