WITSCHI’S

Zurcherstrasse 55; tel.: 01 750 4460; fax: 01 750 1968

Situated in a small town, around ten kilometres north of Zurich, Witschi's restaurant makes a tempting destination for an excursion to have a first class meal. Heinz Witschi is one of the finest chefs in the German speaking part of Switzerland. The restaurant is attractive, with clay-tiled floors, pretty paintings on the walls and flower-pots. There is also a water fountain and you will be given a friendly welcome by Lydia, the head-waitress. Here is a selection of dishes to consider: asparagus charlotte with fresh morels in vinegar, filet of sander (perch-pike) with celery and garden vegetables and as a main course, tender lamb chops from best end of neck. For dessert I recommend a light lemon souffle. The restaurant also has a pleasant terrace.

KRONENHALLE

Ramistrasse 48; tel.: 01 251 6669; fax: 01 251 6681

Art and tradition — that is what Kronenhalle is about. Famous artists' paintings on the walls, both Chagall and Picasso as well as Bonnard and Klee and traditional food on the plates. In many ways Kronenhalle is typical of the German part of Switzerland and its substantial food. There are quite a number of regular guests so be sure to make a reservation. Don't miss the bar, which serves all the classic cocktails.

BAUR AU LAC

Talstrasse 1; tel.: 01 220 5020; fax: 01 220 5044

This hotel is a prestigious landmark in Zurich, superbly located on the shore of Lake Zurich and at the beginning of the fashionable Bahnhofstrasse. The hotel has three excellent restaurants and, unusually, I am featuring all three in this review. The most luxurious is restaurant Le Francais (only open October to May) then there is Le Pavilion, a summer restaurant set right by the river, and next to the hotel's private park, and finally there is Rive Gauche, which is more informal and my favourite. Whether you are doing business or shopping in Zurich, these three are a good starting point. In the bar there are over 100 malt whiskies to choose from.
